Gibbs Flying Service is one of the oldest and most respected aviation businesses in San Diego. The company was started in 1937 when Bill Gibbs moved his pilot training business including a Lincoln Page and Taylor Cub to his newly acquired airport site on Kearny Mesa just north of downtown San Diego. After clearing the brush for two dirt runways he named his airport Gibbs Field. In 1948, after many improvements and use during early WWII as a training field by the CPT program, Gibbs Field was acquired by the City of San Diego and renamed Montgomery Field. This was to honor an early San Diego aviation pioneer and the first American glider pilot John J. Montgomery. Now Montgomery Field is adjacent to the population center of San Diego. The airport is conveniently located eight miles from Downtown or La Jolla and is the closest to the high tech areas of Sorrento Valley, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Del Mar and Miramar.

Since 1937, Gibbs Flying Service has provided aviation services from its Montgomery Field location. The company is still owned and managed by the Gibbs family. The FBO facility is one of the largest full service FBO's in San Diego. The 24 acre site offers everything for the visiting or based aircraft owner and pilot. The busy flight operations office offers separate pilots and passenger lounges, rental cars, WSI satellite weather, DUATS computer access, pilot supplies and a courtesy van. The friendly customer service staff will also provide hotel reservation assistance, arrange for catering, aircraft cleaning or other services that the visiting pilot or aircraft owner may require. The experienced and well trained line service staff provides prompt aircraft handling and fuel services utilizing Chevron Aviation products. The 160,000 square feet of hangar space provides aircraft storage for corporate flight departments, the San Diego Police Department and individual aircraft owners. The 800,000 square feet of ramp offers ample space for 175 based and visiting aircraft.

The Gibbs service department offers quality aircraft maintenance services along with avionics sales, repairs and installations. They specialize in servicing high performance piston and turbine singles and twins. The licensed mechanics and avionics technicians who provide the technical services all have between 20 and 30 years experience, many with over 20 years at Gibbs, except our newest A & P mechanic who has only 7 years experience.

The Gibbs family and staff all are dedicated to providing the visiting or based customer with quality customer service. Please visit us on your next trip to San Diego.
